Renting a Car in Curaçao: What It Costs and What to Book
By Gosa team·Updated July 7, 2026
If you want to see more of Curaçao than your hotel and one beach club, you rent a car. The good beaches and the wild west end are spread out with no real public transport, so a car is what turns a resort stay into an island trip. Here is what it costs and what to book.
Do you need a car?
Short version: for anything beyond a town-and-nearest-beach stay, yes.
- Rent one if you want the west coast beaches, the drive out to Shete Boka and Christoffel park, or the freedom to move on your own schedule.
- You can skip it if you are staying in Willemstad or a nearby resort, plan to walk the town, and are happy taking a taxi to one beach club like Mambo or Jan Thiel.
What it costs
Daily rates by type, before longer-rental discounts:
- Economy hatchback: from about 54 USD/day
- Sedan: from about 59 USD/day
- Pickup: from about 107 USD/day
- Luxury sedan: from about 119 USD/day
- SUV or van: from about 150 USD/day
Which car to book
Match the car to the trip, not the other way around.

Kia Picanto or Similar
USD 54 per day

Kia Rio or Similar
USD 59 per day

Jeep Wrangler or Similar
USD 150 per day

Toyota Hilux or Similar
USD 107 per day

Hyundai Staria or Similar
USD 150 per day

Mercedes-Benz C-Class or Similar

- Couples or solo, mostly town and paved beaches: the economy Picanto or the Rio sedan. Cheap, easy to park in Willemstad's tight streets, and fine for the main beaches.
- Chasing the remote west-end coves: the Wrangler or the Hilux, for the unpaved tracks down to the quieter beaches.
- Families or groups: the Staria van for the space and the luggage.
- A special trip: the C-Class if you want the comfort for the longer island drives.
Driving and parking
Good to know
You drive on the right. Main roads are paved and quiet outside town. In Willemstad, use a paid lot and walk rather than fighting the one-way old streets. A few beach access roads out west are unpaved, so take it slow in a low car. Bring your home driver's license and confirm the rental company's exact requirements when you book.
We point car rentals to Tropic Drive, a local company, and the guilder rates above are theirs. A car pairs naturally with a plan, so once you know your days, Gosa can lay out the beaches and stops you will be driving to.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a car in Curaçao?
For most trips, yes. The best beaches and the whole west end are a 40 to 60 minute drive from Willemstad with no real bus service. If you plan to stay in town and use taxis to a nearby beach club, you can skip it, but you will miss the west coast.
How much is car rental in Curaçao per day?
An economy car starts around 54 USD per day and a sedan around 59. A pickup runs about 107, a luxury sedan about 119, and an SUV or a van around 150 per day. Rates drop for longer rentals.
Is it safe to drive in Curaçao?
Yes. You drive on the right, the main roads are paved and easy, and traffic is light outside Willemstad. Watch for the odd unpaved track down to a remote beach, and use paid parking in the old town rather than driving into the one-way streets.
Do you need a 4x4 in Curaçao?
Not for the main beaches or the paved roads. A normal car reaches Grote Knip, Cas Abao, and most of the west end fine. A higher-clearance SUV or pickup only helps if you want the roughest unpaved beach tracks without worrying.
